The fish market

When the boats return to the fishing port in the early afternoon, the crates of fish are unloaded and taken to the market hall to be sold straight away at auction. Since September 2008, after the historic premises of the Fishing Consortium closed and while the new premises in the old town were being built, the fish market moved to temporary premises in the Sansonessa district, where the first auction was held on 29 September 2008.
The auction follows a procedure of ancient origin: after looking at the lot of fish, the buyers whisper their offer into the auctioneer’s ear; once all the offers are in, the auctioneer calls the one who made the best offer to repeat it out loud, so as to avoid any suspicion.
Every day the Caorle fish market receives a variety of catch that few other markets in Italy can match.

Below are the various species that can be caught during the year in the stretch of the Adriatic fished by Caorle’s boats (between Punta Tagliamento and Chioggia), in the lagoon and in the fresh waters of the Nicesolo, Lemene and Livenza rivers.
