This small church by the sea was constructed around 1000 a.d. and conserves the statue of the patron Virgin Mary of Caorle; the Madonna dell’Angelo. Inside this church, one can also see the original stone base on which she once sat. Legend says that on a stormy day out in sea, fishermen had found a statue of this Virgin Mary floating amongst the waves, covered her in their fishing nets and pulled her into their small fishing boats. As soon as she had been caught the storm had ceased and the sea became calm She was then taken to the small church by the sea and straight away became part of Caorle’s heritage.
Another local legend that fascinates locals and tourists is the flood of 1727. There had been a dreadful flooding and the sea level had risen, causing the small historical centre to be partially covered, however, so the story goes, not a single drop of water had entered inside the church of the Madonna dell’Angelo.
To commemorate the Madonna dell’Angelo, every 5 years there is a famous and popular procession. The Virgin is taken back into the sea and covered in fishing nets just as they had found her all those years ago.
