Fishing in Caorle
For centuries the inhabitants of Caorle have based their economic and social life on fishing. Until recently, fishing had been the main source of income and nearly all families were directly or indirectly involved in this way of life.
Here, fishermen are not only very proud in what they do but they also take their job very seriously nevertheless the unsocial hours and the hard work. In Caorle, fishing is not only a business for the fishermen but a pass time, a culture even with their own ‘dialect’. The fishing boats depart form Caorle’s port at around 2 o’clock in the morning and sail back at about 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Tourists take great joy in watching the float of small fishing boats come back into the port full of fish, and watch the men carrying the fresh fish to the local fish market which is situated opposite the port.
To honour Caorle, the fishing way of life and their patron “Madonna”, every five years there is a religious and social event known as the “festa of the Madonna dell’Angelo”. This is a very important and popular procession were Caorle gets packed with locals and tourists. During the procession the patron Virgin Mary gets carried out by the fishermen into the sea and is blessed by a member of the local parish
